Five things a specialist reads off your photo
You do not need to know any of these to send a photo. This is what we are looking at when your submission comes in, in the order we check it.
- 1 Overall length
The single most useful measurement, and the one most photos leave out. This is why we ask for a tape measure or ruler in the frame.
- 2 Stem broach
The splined or flatted shape at the top that the handle grips. Broach pattern alone rules out most of the catalog.
- 3 Body diameter and shape
Where it steps, where it flares, and how the seals sit on it. Two cartridges can share a length and differ completely here.
- 4 How it was retained
Clip, nut, threaded bonnet, or a bare press fit. This narrows the valve family before we ever look at a catalog.
- 5 Any stamp still legible
Often worn off entirely. When it survives, it confirms what the first four already told us rather than replacing them.
Worn, unmarked, and discontinued cartridges are the normal case here, not the hard case. If the part came out in pieces, lay every piece in one frame and send that.
