Replacing an American Standard Shower Cartridge

How to pull and replace a shower cartridge on an American Standard valve, including pressure balance orientation, what to record before you order the part, and how to handle a seized cartridge.

American Standard has used several valve platforms over the decades, and what comes out of an older two-handle valve does not look much like what comes out of a recent pressure balance unit. The wrench work is straightforward. Getting the right part on the truck before you go back is the part that costs a second trip.

Know which type you are working on

American Standard single-handle shower valves generally use one of two cartridge types, and they are not interchangeable:

Series names you will run into on older jobs include Cadet, Colony, Aquaseal and Heritage. On current pressure balance rough-ins, the Flash platform uses cartridge M970654-0070A, with M970410-0070A listed as interchangeable. Deep rough-ins may need an extension such as M970649.

Shut off and relieve pressure

Kill the water at the fixture stops if the valve has them, otherwise at the main. Open the shower to drain the riser and relieve line pressure. On a tub and shower valve, open the tub spout as well. Skipping this is how a retaining clip becomes a projectile.

Cover the drain. Retaining clips are small, they are spring steel, and they only go one direction when they get away from you.

Get the trim off

Score the caulk around the escutcheon with a utility knife first, so you are not pulling grout out with the trim plate. Loosen the handle set screw with an Allen key, pull the handle, then the escutcheon.

You should now be looking at the valve body, a plaster guard or sleeve, and the face of the cartridge with its retaining hardware.

Record what you are looking at before you pull it

Worth slowing down for, because once the cartridge is out and on the floor of the van you have lost the context that tells you what it is.

Photograph the cartridge face while it is still seated in the valve. Then note:

Those details identify a cartridge far more reliably than a number stamped on a body that has spent fifteen years under hot water. Stamped numbers are often mold or cavity marks rather than orderable part numbers, and on a mass-produced cartridge the stamp is frequently the maker of an aftermarket replacement rather than anything identifying the original.

Trim appearance is the weakest evidence of all, since the same escutcheon and handle can sit in front of more than one valve body.

Pull the cartridge

Remove the retaining clip with needle-nose pliers, keeping a thumb over it. If it is a retaining nut instead, back it off counter-clockwise with an adjustable wrench or the manufacturer’s bonnet tool.

With the retainer fully out, the cartridge should come straight out with steady pull on the stem. Wiggle and pull, working it with slight rotation to break the O-ring seal, then pull square. Never apply pulling force before the retainer is completely clear.

When it is seized

Calcification bonds the cartridge body to the valve housing. In order of what to try:

  1. Penetrant and time. Penetrating oil or a calcium dissolver into the valve cavity, left 15 to 30 minutes. Repeat. This solves more seized cartridges than force does.
  2. A cartridge puller. The correct tool draws the cartridge straight out against the valve body. Pulling square is the whole point, since a cocked cartridge binds harder the further it comes.
  3. Deliberate rotational wiggling with large pliers, rather than a hard straight yank, which is what snaps stems.

If the stem shears and leaves the sleeve in the body, clear every fragment and all sediment from the valve body before anything new goes in. On an older valve that is often the moment to price a valve replacement against continuing.

Set the new cartridge

Lubricate the O-rings with plumber’s silicone grease. Petroleum grease swells EPDM and you will be back.

Seat the cartridge in the same orientation the old one came out, which is what the photograph was for. Some designs will physically go in 180 degrees out, which reverses hot and cold and can compromise the anti-scald function. Line up the orientation marking before it seats.

One thing worth being straight about with customers: a pressure balance cartridge responds to pressure, not to actual temperature. At a maximum-hot setting the valve can still deliver water as hot as the supply feeding it, so if the incoming water is very hot, the temperature limit stop needs adjusting separately. Swapping the cartridge alone does not make a scalding valve safe.

Retainer back in, then test before the trim goes on. Water on, cycle the handle through its full range, check for weep around the stem, and confirm hot is hot. Refitting an escutcheon you are about to pull off again is wasted time.

Getting the right part the first time

The identification is the hard part of this job, not the wrench work. A plumber can pull a cartridge in ten minutes and then lose an afternoon working out which of several near-identical replacements actually fits, especially on a discontinued series where the trim tells you nothing about the valve body behind it.
