Replacing a Price Pfister Shower Cartridge
How to pull and replace a Pfister shower cartridge, including which cartridge fits which valve, the part numbers that have been superseded, and what to record before you order.
The brand dropped “Price” from its name years ago, but nobody in the trade did, and the valves behind the wall predate the change either way. Whether you call it Pfister or Price Pfister, the job is the same, and the hard part is not the wrench work. It is working out which of several similar-looking cartridges belongs in the valve in front of you.
Which cartridge fits which valve
Pfister uses different cartridges across different valve castings, and the numbers have moved over the years. Two families come up constantly:
Deep casting valves (0X8, JX8, VB8, JV8). The genuine replacement is 974-0420, described by Pfister as a pressure balance cartridge with a high temperature limit stop and their Pforever Seal. Note this one: 974-0420 is discontinued and replaced by 974-5299. Older listings still show it as 974-042, which is the same part under the pre-update numbering. If you are working from an old parts list, you will find all three numbers pointing at the same place.
Avante tub and shower. The genuine part is 974-2920, a pull-and-turn cartridge. It is also listed as 974-292, and 974-291 is the earlier designation for what is effectively the same cartridge.
Aftermarket equivalents exist for both. Where the aftermarket listings are useful is the broach spec, since a B-42 broach on a single-lever cartridge tells you more about fit than a brand name does.
Shut off and protect the drain
Turn off the supply stops, then open the valve to drain the riser and relieve pressure. Cover the drain before anything comes apart. The retaining clip on these is small and easy to lose, and a clip that goes down the drain turns a repair into a parts run.
Get to the cartridge
With the handle and escutcheon off, you are looking at the valve body with the cartridge held by a retaining clip, or on some assemblies a bonnet nut over the stem.
Note which you have before you start pulling. A bonnet nut backs off counter-clockwise. A clip lifts out. Applying pull to a cartridge still held by either one is how stems shear.
Record what you have before you pull it
Once the cartridge is out and on the floor of the van, the context that identifies it is gone. Photograph the cartridge face while it is still seated, and note:
- The stem broach, the splined pattern the handle engages. B-42 is common on Pfister single-lever cartridges, and it is a genuinely useful identifier.
- How it is retained, clip or bonnet nut
- Whether it is a pull-and-turn design, as on Avante, or a straight rotate
- The overall length, measured once it is out
Stamped numbers help less than people expect. They are often mold or cavity marks rather than orderable part numbers, and on a mass-produced cartridge the stamp is frequently the aftermarket maker rather than anything identifying the original. Given how many Pfister numbers have been superseded, a number you do find may be pointing at a part that no longer exists under that designation.
Pull the cartridge
With the retaining clip fully out, grip the cartridge stem with pliers and pull straight up while gently twisting. The twist breaks the O-ring seal; the pull does the work. Keep it square to the valve body.
If it is seized from scale, a cartridge puller gives you the leverage to extract it without damaging the valve body. That is the right answer well before a bigger pair of pliers is.
Clean and flush the valve body before the new cartridge goes in. Grit left in the bore is what chews up new O-rings.
Set the new cartridge
Lubricate the O-rings with plumber’s silicone grease, never petroleum grease, which swells EPDM and puts you back in the same bathroom.
Seat the cartridge in the same orientation the old one came out, which is what the photograph was for. Getting it turned around reverses hot and cold, and on a pressure balance valve it can affect how the balancing element sees the supplies.
Retainer or bonnet nut back on before the water goes on. Then test before the trim goes back: cycle the handle through its full range, check for weep around the stem, confirm hot is hot.
On the temperature limit stop
The 974-0420 and its replacements carry a high temperature limit stop. Worth knowing that this is a separate adjustment from the cartridge swap itself.
A pressure balance cartridge responds to pressure differences between the supplies, not to the actual outlet temperature. At a maximum-hot setting the valve can still deliver water as hot as whatever feeds it. If the incoming water is very hot, the limit stop needs setting after the cartridge goes in. Replacing the cartridge alone does not make a scalding valve safe.
Getting the right part the first time
Pfister is the brand where identification bites hardest. The numbering has been superseded more than once, the same trim sits in front of different valve castings, and 0X8, JX8, VB8, JV8 and Avante all look broadly similar from the front of the wall.
Pulling the cartridge takes ten minutes. Working out whether you need 974-5299, 974-2920, or something else entirely, and whether the number stamped on the old one still means anything, is what costs the afternoon.
