Faucet cartridge basics

Know what you're holding.

Faucet cartridges look alike and measure differently. Here's what usually comes out of the valve body, and what a specialist needs to see to name the exact part. Working on a tub or shower valve instead? Those go through shower cartridge identification.

Type

Ceramic disc

Two polished discs inside a plastic or brass body, no rubber seats. Usually a short quarter-turn from off to full open.

Type

Single lever

One stem controls hot and cold together. Look at the base — mixing ports and their layout are part of the fingerprint.

What we need in the photo

Length and spline count settle most IDs.

Full length, ruler in frame

Lay a tape or ruler alongside the whole part. Two cartridges can look identical and differ by half an inch.

Stem and spline count

Shoot the stem straight on and count the splines — 16, 20, 26 and up all exist on similar-looking bodies.

Base and ports — for single lever

The port pattern, keys and tabs on the base separate families that share the same outer shell.

Also tell us

Hot or cold, and which way it shuts off

Two-handle faucets take a matched pair, and the sides are not interchangeable. Note the side you pulled and whether the stem closes clockwise or counter-clockwise — that's often the only difference between two variations of the same cartridge.

The spline count

Counting the splines on the stem narrows hundreds of options down to a handful, and it's how we confirm the match before we quote it.

Corroded, scaled or snapped in half is fine. Send it anyway — body profile, length and splines are usually enough. For the full breakdown of what a specialist reads on each type, see our identification process, or learn how to read a cartridge yourself with our step-by-step identifier tool.
