Replacing a Delta Shower Cartridge
How to identify and replace a Delta tub and shower cartridge, including the white cap versus grey cap test, why the two are not interchangeable, and setting the Rotational Limit Stop.
Delta is the brand where a two-second look at the cap saves you a wasted parts run. There are several cartridge families behind similar-looking trim, they are not interchangeable, and Delta’s own installation sheet leads with how to tell them apart for exactly that reason.
The cap colour test
Once you have the bonnet off, look at the cap on the cartridge:
- White cap means a 1300/1400 series cartridge, RP19804
- Grey cap means a 13/14 MultiChoice cartridge, RP46074
Delta states plainly that cartridges are not interchangeable.
Two more you will meet on newer installs: the MultiChoice T17 series uses RP46463, and the Tempassure T17T series uses RP47201, both shipping from 2007 onward. Delta notes the T17’s dark grey cap was a lighter shade of grey until 2016, which is the sort of detail that makes going by memory risky.
The current RP19804 began shipping in 2015 and can replace any Monitor series using an RP19804.
Shut off the water
Delta’s sheet carries the warning twice, which tells you how often it gets skipped. Shut off the supplies before disassembling the valve, then open it to drain the riser and relieve pressure. Cover the drain.
Disassembly
Following Delta’s sequence:
- Remove the handle
- Pull the sleeve off. If needed, slide the O-ring toward you just below the back of the bonnet. Do not pull the O-ring over the bonnet. When the sleeve goes back on, it slides over this O-ring
- Unscrew the brass bonnet counter-clockwise
- Check the cap colour before going further
Removing the cartridge, which differs by series
This is where the two families part company, and doing it the wrong way damages the valve:
- Grey cap, RP46074 MultiChoice. Place a flat head screwdriver in the notch of the cap and turn to raise it out of the body.
- White cap, RP19804 1300/1400. Do not pry it out with a screwdriver. Reinstall the handle on the brass stem and rotate counter-clockwise while lifting the cartridge out of the two notches on the sides of the body.
Delta also warns not to twist the cap and lower housing of the new cartridge apart. If they do separate, twist them back until they snap together, and never take the lower housing apart.
Record what you have before you order
Photograph the cartridge while it is still seated, and note the cap colour, any wording moulded into the cap, and the series markings on the valve body. Cap colour is the primary tell, but shade has shifted over the years, and a cartridge that has spent a decade under hot water is not always the colour it started.
Stamped numbers help less than people expect. They are often mould or cavity marks rather than orderable part numbers, and on a mass-produced cartridge the stamp is frequently the aftermarket maker rather than anything identifying the original.
Installation
Install the cartridge with the wording “Hot Side” located on the hot water inlet side. Press it into the valve body, making sure the keys are fully engaged with the slots in the body.
For back-to-back or reverse installations, where hot is on the right and cold on the left, the rule is the same: “Hot Side” goes on the hot water inlet side.
Setting the Rotational Limit Stop
This is the step people skip, and on Delta it is a documented scald control, not an optional extra.
The Rotational Limit Stop limits how much hot water is available, so a handle turned fully to hot does not scald. The first position allows the least hot water. Moving it counter-clockwise progressively adds more, and the last position to the left carries the greatest risk of scald injury.
Delta’s procedure:
- Run the water until cold is as cold as it gets and hot as hot as it gets
- Place the handle on the stem and rotate counter-clockwise until it stops
- Hold a thermometer in a plastic tumbler in the stream
- If the water is above 120°F, reposition the limit stop clockwise to bring it below 120°F, or lower if local plumbing codes require it
- To adjust, pull the disc back far enough to remove the limit stop and re-engage the teeth at the desired position. Clockwise decreases outlet temperature
Worth telling the customer: the limit stop may need seasonal readjustment, since colder inlet water in winter changes the outlet temperature. A comfortable bath or shower is typically 90°F to 110°F.
Getting the right part the first time
The cap colour test handles the common case. Where it gets expensive is a discontinued valve, a repainted or discoloured cap, a T17 from the years the grey shade changed, or a cartridge someone already replaced with the wrong thing.
Pulling the cartridge takes ten minutes. Establishing which of RP19804, RP46074, RP46463 or RP47201 you are actually holding, when the cap is ambiguous and the trim tells you nothing, is what costs the afternoon.
