Replacing a Kohler Shower Cartridge
How to service a Kohler Rite-Temp shower valve, including the mixer cap and pressure balancing unit, the alignment that stops it leaking, and what to check before you order parts.
Kohler’s Rite-Temp platform does not work quite the way most single-handle valves do, and that trips up people who approach it expecting one cartridge to pull straight out. On a Rite-Temp you are usually dealing with two serviceable components: a mixer cap and a pressure balancing unit, commonly shortened to PBU. Knowing that before you open the wall saves ordering the wrong thing.
What you are actually replacing
On the K-304 Rite-Temp valve, the service parts are:
- Mixer cap: GP77759
- Pressure balancing unit (PBU): GP500520
- Mixer cap and PBU together as a kit: GP76851
Kohler also lists K-8305 as a Rite-Temp pressure-balance cartridge. Which applies depends on the valve generation behind your trim, which is exactly the thing the trim will not tell you.
Kohler’s guidance is to replace the pressure balancing unit rather than attempt to clean and reuse it.
Shut off first
Kohler states it plainly: shut off the water before doing any repairs to the valve. Open the valve afterward to drain the riser and relieve line pressure, and cover the drain before anything small comes loose.
Disassembly
With the trim off, the sequence on a K-304 is short:
- Remove the two screws
- Remove the collar, which is not present on every valve
- Remove the cap assembly
- Remove the pressure balancing unit with pliers
Inspect the valve body before anything goes back
This is the step that decides whether the repair holds.
Examine the interior of the brass valve body for debris or burrs. If you find scale, Kohler’s own recommendation is a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution, worked with a Scotch-Brite pad used carefully, since the sealing surfaces are what you are trying to protect.
While you are in there, confirm the small O-rings are present on the back of the PBU and the large O-rings on the back of the cap assembly. A missing O-ring found now is a lot cheaper than one found after the trim is back on.
Record what you have before you order
If you are not certain which generation of valve you have, photograph it before the parts leave the site. Worth capturing:
- The face of the PBU and the cap assembly, seated if possible
- Any casting marks or numbers on the brass valve body itself
- The collar, if present, since not every valve has one
Numbers stamped on the removed part are less reliable than they look. They are frequently mold or cavity marks, and on a mass-produced replacement the stamp is often the aftermarket maker rather than anything identifying the original Kohler part.
Reassembly and the alignment that matters
Apply silicone lubricant to the small O-rings on the back of the PBU. Kohler notes lubricant is not required on the large O-rings at the bottom of the cap assembly, though the larger O-ring around the cap assembly does get lubricated.
Then the critical part. The tab inside the brass body aligns with the notch cut out on the back of the PBU. The PBU has to go in completely horizontal, never at an angle. Installing it angled pushes the small O-rings in the PBU out of position, and the valve leaks. This is the single most common way a Rite-Temp service goes wrong.
Position the black cap assembly with its top at the 12 o’clock position, fit the metal collar, and tighten the left and right screws.
Test before the trim goes back on. Water on, cycle the handle through its full range, check for weep, confirm hot is hot.
A note on pressure balance and scald risk
A pressure balancing unit responds to pressure changes between the supplies, not to the actual outlet temperature. At a maximum-hot setting the valve can still deliver water as hot as whatever is feeding it. If the incoming water is very hot, the temperature limit stop needs setting separately. Replacing the PBU alone does not make a scalding valve safe.
Getting the right part the first time
Rite-Temp has gone through several generations, and the handle and escutcheon in front of a valve are poor evidence of which one you have. The same trim can sit over more than one valve body, which is why “it looks like the one in the picture” is how people end up with a part that will not seat.
Pulling the cap and PBU takes minutes. Establishing which generation you are holding, and what actually replaces it, is the part that costs the afternoon.
